Introduction to Career Counseling
Career counselor is an educated, trained professional who guides clients in researching, selecting, planning, entering, developing and changing careers. A career counselor is also known as a placement counselor as he or she helps clients get placed into a suitable career or at least placed onto a compatible career path. People have different needs, so the career counselor's duties will be different with each client. Sometimes the same client could have a different need for each stage in their life. To help clients selecting the right path, in many cases the career counselor would have to identify with the client their life or career goals, their personality traits and their skills as well as their emotional ability to handle specific challenges.
This calls for an open transparent conversation to take place prior to any recommendations being made by the counselor. Many career counselors give advice too fast or jump to conclusions. We believe that a good career path is actually a matrix comprised of carefully considered criteria that should lead to an educated decision. We believe that every career decision is actually a reconciliation process between many factors such as opportunities at hand, skills, personality traits, interests, values, potential financial earnings and a person’s unique set of circumstances. All this factors should be placed on a weighing scale and be evaluated.
Deciding on a career path is a Compelling Decision, a decision that may impact the rest of your life, if you are a young person just beginning a career or a mature adult wanting to make a career change.
